For it is not clear what causes irritable bowel syndrome, treatment focuses on relieving symptoms, so that you can live a life as normal as possible.

In most cases you can successfully control mild signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, learning stress, manage, and changes to your diet and lifestyle. But if your problems are moderate or severe, you can more than a change in lifestyle alone, must be able to offer. Your doctor may recommend:

* Surcharge fibers. Taking fiber supplements such as psyllium (Metamucil) or methylcellulose (Citrucel) with fluids may help control constipation.
* Anti-diarrhea. Over-the-can) counter medications such as loperamide (Imodium to help control diarrhea.
* The elimination of foods high gas --a. If you are angry, or swelling of the large quantities of gas, your doctor may also ask to cut things like soft drinks, salads, fruits and vegetables, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower.
* Anticholinergics. Some people need medication to relieve the impact of certain activities of the nervous system (anticholinergics) to painful intestinal cramps.
* Antidepressants. If your symptoms of pain or depression can be, your doctor may recommend tricyclic antidepressants or an inhibitor selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These drugs relieve depression, and by inhibiting the activity of the neurons that control the bowel. For diarrhea and abdominal pain, the doctor can tricyclic antidepressants, recommend how imipramINE (Tofranil) and amitriptyline. Effects of these drugs are drowsiness and constipation. SSRIs such as fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem) or paroxetine (Paxil) would be useful if you suffer from depression and pain, and constipation.
* Advice. When antidepressants do not work, you can better results from counseling if stress tends to aggravate your symptoms.

Some studies have shown that some people with IBS may benefit from treatment with antibiotics, but this still unproven.
